Start the New Year right: Back up your computer, iPhone and iPad!

Posted by: jim in Blog

A new year is a good time to create good habits, and the best computing habit you can have is to back up your data regularly. We have talked before about Apple's automated backup system, Time Machine, but it bears repeating. Your data (pictures, movies, music, documents) are precious. All Apple computers come with Time Machine, which makes backing up your data automatic and requires minimal effort to set up. All you need to get started is an external drive.

We stock a wide variety in both our stores, from Apple's Time Capsule (a wireless router/hard drive combination) to LaCie, Buffalo and Western Digital Drives. And if the process intimidates you, we can set up your automatic backups for you and complete the first one for only $29 -- all you'll need to do afterwards is bring your computer home and plug the hard drive in for it to continue daily backups of your data.

Mac & iPad Tip: Reader

Posted by: jim in Blog

Tagged in: Untagged

We always enjoy showing off this particular tip on our demo iPads and computers, because it is a little known one that can really improve your reading experience online. Safari has a functionality called Reader that allows you to read articles, blog posts and other text on websites without any of the ads and distractions of a typical webpage. It also gives you some text sizing options that can make it easy to read small text in an article.

iPad: More tips and tricks!

As iPads are the hot gift this year, we thought we'd continue to offer some tips and tricks for new users.

The first is just a reminder of how powerful the search screen on the iPad is. When you are on your home screen, you can swipe from right to left to access this screen (or simply press the home button again). When you search for something from this screen, it looks through the contents of your iPad to find matches. It can be the quickest way to find an email, a contact, or even an app for those of us with pages of them. It also gives you the choice to search the web or wikipedia for your term. In the example screenshot above, I searched for "Cape" and it found the contact information of a Cape Mac coworker, a song with the word Cape in it, and some emails referencing the Cape.

We've got Apple's smart covers in stock -- these colorful covers will send your iPad to sleep when you close it and wake it up when you open it. They attach with magnets, so they are easy to move and remove. And with the simple fold of a triangle, they serve as a stand at perfect angles for typing, watching movies and reading.

Moshi screen protectors have long been our favorites -- they're easy to put on, cut down on glare in bright light, never bubble, and you can remove them and wash them. They are one of the first things we recommend when someone asks what accessories they should consider for their new iOS device, so we're excited that we now have them in stock for the iPad mini!
